Possible Side Effects & Risks of Injectable Treatments

While cosmetic injectables are generally safe when administered by trained professionals, side effects can occur. These are often temporary but should always be understood before proceeding.

Common & Expected Side Effects

You may experience some of the following reactions after treatment:

  • Redness or swelling at the injection site
  • Bruising or tenderness
  • Mild pain or discomfort
  • Headaches or nausea
  • Temporary numbness or tingling

These typically resolve within a few days and are part of the normal healing process.

Less Common or Rare Risks

Although rare, more serious side effects may include:

  • Infection or abscess formation
  • Lumps, nodules or uneven results
  • Vascular occlusion (blockage of a blood vessel)
  • Tissue necrosis (skin death)
  • Allergic reactions
  • Visual disturbances or blindness (very rare)
  • Psychological effects such as anxiety or depression

Downtime & Recovery: What to expect by treatment type

Dermal Fillers

Typical Downtime:

  • Swelling, redness, tenderness: 2–5 days
  • Bruising (especially lips/under eyes): up to 10 days
  • Final results: 2–4 weeks

If Complications Occur:

  • Lumps, migration or nodules: 2–6 weeks, may need massage/dissolving/antibiotics/steroids
  • Vascular occlusion: Emergency dissolving; recovery may take weeks to months. Blindness can be irreversible.
  • Skin staining: May last weeks to months, sometimes permanent
  • Infection/abscess: 1–3 weeks with antibiotics
  • Tissue necrosis/scarring: May take months, require specialist care
  • Emotional distress: Support or referral may be required

Anti-Wrinkle Injections

Before every injectable treatment, your treating nurse and/or doctor will explain:

  • What to expect during and after your procedure

You’ll also receive a 12-month treatment plan tailored to your goals. If you change the product, dosage, or area being treated, a new prescription will be required.
